For classes 5/27 - 6/17

Thurs. 6/12 - Tues. 6/17 - During this time, you each presented your author study project as your final.

HW: Have a great summer!

Tues. 6/10 (B day) and Wed. 6/11 (A day) - We went over the housekeeping checklist as a class, then filled out a survey online and worked on completing the checklist. In extra time, you worked on makeup or author study.

TO DO IF YOU MISSED: See me ASAP to complete the checklist.

HW: Author studies due finals week - soon! Any makeup work needs to be in by your final.

Sports and Lit.: After the SS, we took a class survey online, went over the final essay assignment (download below), did some SNS's, and played SceneIt Sports.

Mon. 6/9 (A day) - Today was the last work day for author studies.

HW: Author study due Fri. (1 and 2), Tues. (4).

Wed. 6/4 - Fri. 6/6 - We went over the last vocab quiz, which you took home with you, and then worked on author studies until the end of the period.

HW: Author study due soon! Vocab due next time.

Sports and Lit: After the SS, we watched "Rocky" and talked about ageism, the movie as a classic, heroes in sports, etc.

HW: 1 Sports news share for next time.

Mon. 6/2 (B day) and Tues. 6/3 (A day) - We went right into author study work today, going over an example and using the rubric on it, then taking time for working on our own.

HW: Author study due in 2 weeks; Caesar essays were due today.

Sports and Lit.: After the SS, we talked about ageism in sports, working on a worksheet relating the concept to the reality of sports.

Thurs. 5/29 (B day) and Fri. 5/30 (A day) - We went right into essay work today, taking the whole period to work on Caesar essays. If you finished, you had time to work on AS work.

Tues. 5/27 (B day) and Wed. 5/28 (A day) - Skipping Eng. Mech. and journal, we went right into IRP, practicing a few of the reading strategies in your journal. Then, we went over vocab and took some time to finish up any Caesar guides out there still undone. After that, we talked about portfolios and the time schedule for the last 3 weeks of class, then went over the Julius Caesar essay assignment. In the remaining time, we planned out the essays and either started on them or worked on author study work until the end of the period.

Sports and Lit. - After the SS (what place do sports have in our society other than entertainment?), we collected your writing prompts, took surveys (seniors = end semester, others = where to go from here), did some SNS's, and then celebrated the seniors last class.

For classes 5/12 - 5/23

Thurs. 5/22 (B day) and Fri. 5/23 (A day) - We first went into vocab, skipping everything else.  Then, we went over the vocab and first question in your movie guide before using the rest of class to watch Caesar acts 3-5.  We stopped at the fitting times to answer the questions found in your guide (download below).

TO DO IF YOU MISSED: See me to either watch what you missed in the film or read the play acts 4-5 to answer the guide's questions.

HW: Author study - read, read, read!

Sports and Lit.: After a quick reading quiz over the final reading of The Natural, we finished the film, talking at the end of class about the use of the fairy tale ending.

HW: Writing prompts due Tues.  For Molly and Tracy, SNS due as well. 

Wed. 5/21 (A day) - Vocab day! After Eng. Mech, journal and IRP, we went into Pictcharabulary and took the quiz for unit 12.

Mon. 5/19 (A day) and Tues. 5/20 (B day) - After journal, IRP, and vocab, we talked briefly about author study, going over the checklist you can download below. Then, we recapped where we were in Caesar by filling out some reading guide questions, and then we finished act 3, taking time to focus on Brutus' and Antony's funeral speeches and their impact on the Plebs. At the end of class, we finished the act 3 reading guide and passed them in.

TO DO IF YOU MISSED: Finish act 3 in the book (get one from me) and finish the act 3 RG. Go over the author study checklist below.

Thurs. 5/15 (A day) and Fri. 5/16 (B day) - After Eng. mech. (Pronoun/antecedent ambiguity), journal, IRP, and vocab, we finished the act 2 reading guide, then started the act 3 reading guide and read through the assassination scene, acting it out and discussing motives as we did so.

TO DO IF YOU MISSED: See me to get the reading guide for act 3 and the reading that you missed; pass in your act 2 RG.

Sports and Lit.: After the SS (Barkley gambling), I modelled a sports news share to spur you into action. Then, we did a reading quiz and then finished and passed in your human interest pieces, and then worked on getting some SNS's done for next week, and talked about the upcoming schedule.

TO DO IF YOU MISSED: See me to make up the reading quiz; pass in your human interest piece; get going on SNSs.

HW: Skip to 161 and then read from there to 206. Quiz next class.

Wed. 5/14 (B day) - After Eng. Mech., journal,IRP, and vocab, we went on to vocab in period 5, doing the normal thing. In period 6, we started the act 3 reading guide and read through the assassination scene, acting it out and discussing motives as we did so.

Sports and Lit. - After the SS, we again took a reading quiz, then talked about future readings. Then, we continued working on the human interest pieces.

Mon. 5/12 (B day) and Tues. 5/13 (A day)- After Eng. Mech. (pronoun/number agreement) and journal, we went into IRP and vocab. Then, we answered questions in the act 1 reading guide and passed it in, started the act 2 guide, and then read through act 2, finishing it by the end of class.

TO DO IF YOU MISSED: Fill out the act 1 guide and pass it in; see me to get a book to finish act 2 and complete the RG.

HW: Vocab wed. for B days; others, read for author study.

Sports and Lit.: After the SS, we took a reading quiz for the Natural, then went over how to do a human interest piece, looking at an example online. In the remaining time, we worked on creating a human interest piece focused on Roy Hobbs.

For classes 4/28 - 5/9

Fri. 5/9 (A day) - After journal,  we had IRP and then went over vocab.  We then finished our act 1 reading guides, passed them in, and started act 2 of "Caesar," along with the reading guide.

Sports and Lit.: After the SS (Kobe = MVP?), we took a reading quiz for the natural (up to page 59), then reread Pop Fisher's speech on page 49, analyzed it for effectiveness, and then listened to the "Inches" speech and did the same.  Following this, we worked on creating our own game speeches.

HW: Read through page 82 for Mon; reading quiz in class. 

Wed. 5/7 (A day) - Vocab day! After Eng. Mech, journal and IRP, we went into Pictcharabulary and took the quiz for unit 11.

Mon. 5/5 (A day) and Tues. 5/6 (B day) - After IRP, in the shortened schedule we did vocab and then read from Caesar, answering questions on the reading guide as we did so.

Sports and Lit.: After SS, we took a quick reading quiz for our assigned reading of The Natural, then read from page 20-25 aloud as a class and discussed. Following this, we took some time to work on Sports News Shares.

Fri. 5/2 (B day) - After IRP, we went into vocab. Then, in the shortened schedule we went over the procedure for reading Caesar, chose parts, and read through part of act 1, completing some of the reading guide as we did so.

Sports and Lit: After the SS, we had Molly and Derek present their natural sheets. Then, we took a reading quiz for the reading, read from 20-25 aloud and discussed, and then worked on Sports News Shares.

Thurs. 5/1 (A day) - After Eng. Mech., journal, and IRP, we went into vocab. Then, with the sub you completed the "Hungry for Power" worksheet.

Wed. 4/30 (B day) - Vocab day! After Eng. Mech, journal and IRP, we went into Pictcharabulary and took the quiz for unit 11.

Sports and Lit.: After the SS, we previewed The Natural, going over how we'll read, themes, etc. Then, we went over what a natural means and found our own naturals in sports we liked, then presented our findings.

Mon. 4/28 (B day) and Tues. 4/29 (A day) - After Eng. Mech. (sentence types) and journal, we went into IRP and vocab. Then, we viewed an IMovie on Caesar (play and the man) and filled out notes for the history of both, as well as some lit terms for the play. In the time remaining, we voted with our feet around some big themes in the play.

TO DO IF YOU MISSED: Make up the routine and the notes from the presentation.

HW: Vocab due Wed.

Sports and Lit.: After the SS, we logged on to a wiki site and answered questions in pairs around the Rollerball readings and viewings.

For classes 3/31 - 4/15

Mon. 4/14 and Tues. 4/15 - After Eng. mech. (more complex sentences) and journal/IRP, we went into our last work day for multi-genre projects. They are due Wed. (A days) and Thurs. (B days)! Remember, you need 3 genres, notecards for each genre, and a cover page with your project.

TO DO IF YOU MISSED: Finish your projects for next class.

HW: A days - unit 9 vocab due Wednesday. Also, see above due dates for MG projects.

Sports and Lit.: After the SS, we presented your powerpoints on violence in sports and discussed, then briefed the film for Rollerball and began watching it.

Thurs. 4/10 and Fri. 4/11 - After English mechanics (moving on to complex sentences), we went into journal, IRP, and vocab. Then, we continued working on our multi-genre projects, filling out work slips and getting to them.

TO DO IF YOU MISSED: Make up the routine; work on the mg projects.

HW: Multi-genre projects due Wed. (A days) and Thurs. (B days) of next week.

Sports and Lit.: After the SS (Age limits - good for sports), we finished up work on the violence in sports powerpoints, presented and discussed these, and then, in any time remaining, discussed the Rollerball movie and began watching it.

Wed. 4/9 (B day) - Vocab day! After journal and IRP, we went into Pictcharabulary and took the quiz for unit 10.

HW: Multi-genre projects due next week.

Mon. 4/7 (B day) and Tues. 4/8 (A day) - After a return to Eng. Mech. - woohoo! - where we went over compound sentences, we went into journal, IRP, and vocab. Then, we used the rest of the time to fill out work slips for multi-genre projects, and then worked on the projects until the end of class.

TO DO IF YOU MISSED: Make up the routine. Work on your multi-genre project.

HW: B days - Vocab unit 10 due Wed. All - mg projects due next week.

Sports and Lit.: After the SS (article/stats about homosexuality in sports - great discussion!), we went on to focus on violence in sports. We read Harrison's Roller Ball Murder in groups and then discussed some big questions, looked at an article geared towards elementary kids focused on sports violence, read another article about the reality of sports violence, and then watched a clip of the WWE.

No one missed!

HW: None.

Thurs. 4/3 (B day) and Fri. 4/4 (A day) - After journal and IRP, we went into vocab and then completed the housekeeping checklist for quarter 3 (found below). After this, any extra time was spent on make-up work, IRP, or multi genre projects.

TO DO IF YOU MISSED: See me ASAP to fill out the housekeeping checklist - if you don't have everything in and filed by Friday, your quarter grade could be affected.

Wed. 4/2 (A day) - After journal and IRP, we went over late work requirements - everything is due by Friday! Then, in periods 1 and 4 we went over the multi-genre project directions (found below for download) and began working on those. In period 2, we instead did the Cyrano song/cd assignment (also found below).

Sports and Lit.: After the Sports Shorts (should the Olympics be used for political means?), we did a Sports News Share (yeah Taylor!) and used the rest of the period as our last work day for FNL projects.

Mon. 3/31 (A day) - We spent the entire period today working on RTL's for this quarter. You could write it on any book, but Cyrano is one we all know and have discussed...

For classes 3/17 - 3/28

Fri. 3.28 (B day) - Skipping everything today, we worked on RTLs the entire period.

TO DO IF YOU MISSED: Get an RTL to me ASAP.

Sports and Lit. - After the SS, you worked on either blog prompts, FNL project, or Sports News Share. 

Thurs. 3/27 (A day) - We skipped all but IRP today, and went into the Cyrano test for the entire period.

TO DO IF YOU MISSED: See me to make up the test - must be done before next week ends.

HW: We'll work on RTLs next class - have the organizer done if you need it. 

Wed. 3/26 (B day) -  Vocab day! After journal and IRP, we went into Pictcharabulary and took the quiz for unit 9.

Sports and Lit. - After the SS (Canseco and A-Rod), we continued working on the blog prompts for FNL.  Then, we went over the FNL end unit project, which can be found below.

Tues. 3/25 (A day) - After IRP (per. 2) and vocab, we went right into Cyrano today, finishing the play in all periods.  Then, we did the final Sum The C and Q, and worked on the SAT worksheet in periods 1 and 2.

Mon. 3/24 (B day) - We skipped everything but vocab today, when we also went over a sample of the new vocab quiz format which we'll start next time. Then, we used the rest of the period for the Cyrano test.

HW: Vocab for Wed. - unit 9. Study mainly definitions and synonyms.

Sports and Lit.: After the SS (an article about Terrelle Pryor), we went on to share and evaluate the PTI sessions. Then, we got laptops and checked out some real life connections to the main thematic issues found in Friday Night Lights, writing about these issues on this website.

Fri. 3/21 (A day) - I was out today due to a car accident - see me to find out what you missed.

Thurs. 3/20 (B day) - After journal, IRP, and vocab, we finished the SAT article from last class and checked your HW (song lyrics). Then, we talked about the next few weeks of class, went over the Cyrano multi-genre project, and worked on your CD assignment.

Sports and Lit. - We went directly into Friday Night Lights, finishing it today and then brainstorming specifics related to our big topics (pressure, football as an out, and disparity between sports and others).
