Wed.'s class

Hello!  As you can see, I'm out today with a pretty brutal cold.  However, through the miracle of modern technology, I'm able to give you direct instructions as to what you need to do today.  Lucky you! :)

First, for Sports Shorts check out the following article (skim to get the basics) and leave your response as a comment on this entry.

Wiggins article -Wiggins is the only player - male or female - to score 40+ points twice in the same NCAA tournament.  Why, then, is the women's tournament - and women stars such as Wiggins - significantly less popular on TV, fans, etc.?

Next, to continue our discussion of violence in sports, I'd like you to form 3 groups to work on a mini-group project.  Choose groups as you see fit.  For the project, I'd like you to create a group powerpoint that focuses on one of the following topics:

- WWE (wrestling)

- UFC (Ultimate fighting)

- Boxing

Each group should pick a different topic, so you'll need to talk this out amongst yourselves.   Once you've chosen a topic, your task is to research the history of it, find some information about its' popularity and prevalence in our sports world, and get some info on the violence contained within (pics, clips, articles, etc.). Compile this into a brief powerpoint, and then at the end of the powerpoint put a few slides answering the following questions:

    - What would happen to this sport if violence was reduced - new rules, for example?

    - Is this "sport" a true sport - why/not?

    - Is this sport a representation of the larger culture of violence that is found in the sports world - why/not?  This one should be a         fairly in-depth answer - can elaborate in presentation, though.

The end powerpoint should be ROUGHLY 15 slides.  I'd like to do presentations and discussion next class.

I'll be checking my email off and on during the day ([email protected]), so if you have any questions, send them my way.

Friday Night Lights - Real Life Connections

As we discussed prior to watching the film, Friday Night Lights is a film that deals with many of the large issues in sports. And, because it is essentially a documentary (a fictionalized documentary, if that is possible), each of those large issues relates directly to the reality of the sporting world.

With that said, the film/story took place in 1988, but today's current sporting world is still full of the same issues. To help us make these current connections, below are some articles and video clips that relate to what we saw in the film. Under each, I'd like you to leave a comment that addresses 2 things - first, your reactions to the clip/article. Second, what connections do you see between the article/clip and what we saw in Friday Night Lights? Be as specific as possibe, citing examples from the film to back up what you're writing.

For the YouTube clips, if you need a bypass, let me know.  I also have headphones for you to use if you need them.
